Hell's Revenge: The Ultimate Moab Slickrock OHV Trail Guide

~215 miles from Lehi (~4 hours)
Difficulty:Advanced
Vehicles:SxS, High-clearance 4x4

Hell's Revenge is one of the most talked-about OHV trails in the country — and for good reason. Located in Moab's Sand Flats Recreation Area, this iconic slickrock trail delivers sheer drop-offs, steep climbs, whoop-de-doos, and some of the best panoramic views in the American Southwest. If you're making the trip from Lehi, plan on about 4 hours one-way — and bring your best machine.

Getting There

Take I-70 east to US-191 south into Moab. Follow Sand Flats Road east from downtown Moab (~2 miles). Pay the Sand Flats Recreation Area fee ($10/day vehicle + $5/night camping).

Trail Overview

Hell's Revenge is 6.3 miles of pure slickrock challenge. The trail winds across exposed sandstone domes with steep ascents, descents, and technically demanding features that require driver confidence and capable machines.

  • Total length: ~6.3 miles
  • Elevation change: ~800 ft
  • Terrain: Bare Navajo sandstone slickrock, sand pockets, ledges
  • Key features: The Escalator, Hot Tubs, Whoop-De-Doos, Hell's Gate
  • Skill level: Advanced — beginners should not attempt

Vehicle Requirements

  • High-clearance 4x4 or purpose-built SxS
  • Proper skid plates and rock armor recommended
  • At least 35" tires for 4x4 vehicles
  • Air down tires to 18–22 PSI for slickrock traction

The Polaris RZR XP 1000 excels here — narrow enough for the tight sections, powerful enough for the climbs.

Best Season to Visit

  • Spring (March–May): Ideal temperatures, dry rock
  • Fall (September–November): Cool air, stunning desert light
  • Avoid summer: Rock surface temps can exceed 150°F
  • Avoid wet conditions: Wet slickrock is dangerously slippery

What Makes It Special

  • The Escalator — a nearly vertical slickrock ascent
  • Hot Tubs — potholes carved by water, great for photos
  • Panoramic views of Arches National Park and the Colorado River
  • One of the most photographed trails in the American West

Ride in the morning — afternoon heat and glare make the rock harder to read.
