How to Winterize an ATV or UTV in Utah (Complete Cold-Weather Guide)

If you plan to store or ride your ATV or UTV during Utah's winter, proper winterization is critical. Cold temperatures, moisture, and inactivity can cause battery failure, fuel issues, and long-term engine damage if machines aren't prepared correctly.

Step 1: Clean Your ATV or UTV Thoroughly

Before storage, start with a full clean.

  • Wash off mud, salt, and trail debris
  • Pay attention to suspension, undercarriage, and brakes
  • Let the machine dry completely

Dirt traps moisture, which leads to corrosion over winter.

Step 2: Stabilize the Fuel System

Fuel breakdown is one of the most common winter issues.

  • Add fuel stabilizer to the tank (we use SeaFoam)
  • Fill the tank completely to reduce condensation
  • Run the engine for 5–10 minutes to circulate stabilized fuel

Step 3: Battery Care (Critical in Cold Weather)

Cold temperatures drain batteries quickly.

  • Remove the battery and store it indoors, OR
  • Connect a battery tender while stored

Never let a battery sit discharged all winter — it may not recover.

Step 4: Check Fluids & Coolant Protection

  • Engine oil (change if it's due)
  • Coolant rated for freezing temperatures
  • Brake fluid and transmission fluid

Low or degraded fluids increase the risk of internal damage.

Step 5: Tires, Suspension & Storage

  • Inflate tires to recommended pressure
  • Move the machine occasionally during long storage to avoid flat spots
  • Consider placing on stands for long-term storage

Step 6: Protect Against Moisture & Rodents

  • Plug exhaust outlets with steel wool
  • Use rodent deterrents around the machine
  • Cover with a breathable ATV/UTV cover — avoid plastic tarps
