Mineral Basin OHV: Advanced Riding at the Top of American Fork Canyon

~35 minutes from Lehi
Difficulty:Advanced
Vehicles:ATVs, SxS (narrow)

Mineral Basin sits at the upper end of American Fork Canyon — and it earns its reputation as the most challenging OHV terrain in the area. Tight switchbacks, loose granite, steep grades, and high-altitude exposure make this ride a serious challenge. But the views? Completely worth it.

Getting There

Access via American Fork Canyon (UT-92). Follow the upper canyon road past Tibble Fork toward Mineral Basin. A canyon fee applies.

GPS: 40.493°N, 111.626°W. Narrow sections — check vehicle width before heading up.

Trail Overview

  • Elevation: 8,000–10,000+ ft
  • Terrain: Loose granite, tight switchbacks, steep grades
  • Skill Level: Advanced — not recommended for beginners
  • Access to Snowbird Ski Resort boundary (do not trespass)

Vehicle Requirements

  • Narrow SxS or ATV only (width restrictions)
  • High-clearance required
  • Good brakes essential for steep descent
  • Carry recovery gear

The Polaris RZR XP 1000 works well — narrow enough for the switchbacks, powerful enough for the climbs.

Best Season

  • Mid-July through September only
  • Snow lingers well into July at this elevation
  • Weather changes fast — watch for afternoon storms
