Stansbury Island OHV Guide: Desert Ridge Riding Above the Great Salt Lake

~90 minutes from Lehi
Difficulty:Beginner
Vehicles:ATVs, SxS, 4x4

Stansbury Island isn't actually an island anymore — land reclamation connected it to the mainland decades ago. But riding its ridgelines still feels completely isolated, with 360-degree views of the Great Salt Lake, the Bonneville Salt Flats, and Skull Valley. This is one of Utah's best kept OHV secrets — rarely crowded and totally unique.

Getting There

Take I-80 west from Salt Lake City toward Tooele. Exit at Grantsville/Stansbury Park and follow Stansbury Island Road north. Access roads are dirt and require a vehicle with decent clearance.

GPS: 40.724°N, 112.539°W. Allow 90 minutes from Lehi. No fees or permits required.

Riding Overview

  • Wide open desert ridge and valley terrain
  • Elevation views over the Great Salt Lake
  • Mix of smooth roads and rocky ridge tracks
  • Beginner-friendly — minimal technical hazards
  • Rarely crowded — often have the entire island to yourself

Wildlife & Scenery

  • Pronghorn antelope sightings are common
  • Migratory birds along the lake shoreline
  • Stunning sunsets over the salt flats
  • Unique desert-lake landscape unlike any other Utah OHV area

Spring and fall are ideal — summer heat is intense and can be dangerous in this exposed terrain.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Bring plenty of water — no services on the island
  • Best explored in a UTV for a comfortable cruise
  • Stay on existing roads — sensitive soil areas are nearby
  • Pair with The Knolls for a full west desert OHV day
