What to Wear for Winter ATV & UTV Riding in Utah

Difficulty:All Levels

Winter ATV and UTV riding in Utah can be incredible — fewer crowds, stunning scenery, and cooler temps for machines. But wearing the wrong gear can quickly turn a great ride into a miserable (or unsafe) experience.

Why Winter Riding Gear Matters

Cold air, wind, snow, and changing trail conditions mean exposure is your biggest enemy. Proper winter riding gear helps you:

  • Stay warm without overheating
  • Maintain dexterity and control
  • Stay dry in snow or slush
  • Reduce fatigue on long rides

Layering and material choice matter more than bulk.

Base Layer: Stay Warm & Dry

Your base layer is the most important piece of winter riding gear.

  • Moisture-wicking thermal tops and bottoms
  • Merino wool or synthetic materials
  • Avoid cotton — it traps moisture and stays cold

Mid Layer: Insulation Without Restriction

  • Fleece jackets
  • Lightweight insulated pullovers
  • Soft-shell layers that breathe and allow airflow

Outer Layer: Wind & Weather Protection

  • Windproof and water-resistant jacket
  • Durable riding pants or bibs
  • Ventilation zippers for temperature control

Gloves, Boots & Face Protection

  • Gloves: Insulated, waterproof, gauntlet-style cuffs — avoid bulky gloves that reduce throttle control
  • Boots: Waterproof riding boots with insulated winter socks (wool preferred)
  • Helmet: Full-face with insulated or anti-fog goggles
  • Face: Balaclava or neck gaiter for cold air at speed

ATVs have more wind exposure — prioritize wind-blocking layers. UTVs offer more protection, but gloves and face protection are still recommended.
