Winter ATV & UTV Riding Checklist for Utah Conditions

N/A
Difficulty:All Levels
Vehicles:ATVs, SxS

This checklist is designed for winter riding near Lehi and across Utah's desert trails. It works equally well for ATV and UTV riders and reinforces safety, preparedness, and confidence before every cold-weather ride.

Rider Gear Checklist

Before you leave the parking area, make sure you have:

  • Moisture-wicking base layers (top & bottom)
  • Insulating mid-layer (fleece or lightweight insulated jacket)
  • Windproof/water-resistant outer layer
  • Insulated, waterproof gloves
  • Winter riding boots or waterproof boots
  • Wool or insulated socks
  • Full-face helmet
  • Goggles with anti-fog or dual-pane lenses
  • Balaclava or neck gaiter

Machine Readiness Checklist

Your ATV or UTV should be winter-ready:

  • Fully charged battery
  • Proper tire pressure (cold temps reduce PSI)
  • Fuel treated with stabilizer
  • Fluids checked (oil, coolant, brake fluid)
  • Lights fully functional (shorter daylight hours)
  • Belts and driveline inspected
  • Brakes responsive and dry

Safety & Emergency Checklist

Winter riding means help may be farther away:

  • Fully charged phone or GPS device
  • Offline maps downloaded
  • First-aid kit
  • Emergency warm layer
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Tow strap or basic recovery gear
  • Water and high-energy snacks

Trail & Weather Check

Always check conditions before riding:

  • Weather forecast (wind + temp matter)
  • Recent snowfall or storms
  • Trail closures or seasonal restrictions
  • Sunset time (dark comes early in winter)

Desert trails can freeze overnight and thaw mid-day — plan accordingly.
